Crystalens is a type of artificial lens known as an accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) available at our Orange County practice. FDA-approved, Crystalens can improve diminished vision quality resulting from cataracts (a clouding of the lens) and/or presbyopia (the age-related inability to focus on near objects).
There are three basic IOLs: monofocal, multifocal, and accommodating. Monofocal IOLs correct for distant vision, but generally require patients to wear corrective lenses for near vision. Multifocal IOLs, on the other hand, give a greater range of vision–near, middle, and far–and thus reduce the need for glasses. However, neither monofocal or multifocal IOLs work with the eye’s muscle. An accommodating lens does.
As the eye ages and becomes less elastic, the accommodation process becomes less instantaneous and more strained. Unlike other artificial lenses, an accommodating IOL is uniquely designed to recreate a focusing process called accommodation–a process that enables the eye to dynamically adjust and focus on objects at various distances. Because an accommodating IOL is secured in place by a more flexible mechanism that other types of artificial lenses, it can act more like the natural lens.
Crystalens can treat both cataracts and presbyopia and most people who visit our Huntington Beach location are considered good candidates for the implantation surgery. If you have a pre-existing visual condition or suffer from chronic eye infections, you may not be an ideal candidate for Crystalens. At Beach Eye Medical Group in Huntington Beach, our highly qualified Orange County eye doctors will examine your eyes and review your medical history before recommending treatment.
Crystalens, the only FDA-approved accommodating IOL, can provide a long-lasting vision solution. In clinical studies, patients have reported sustained results for up to seven years. Other advantages include:
Although serious complications are extremely rare, Crystalens implantation has some associated risks, similar to those carried by routine cataract surgery and other intraocular lenses. Before your corrective surgery at our Huntington Beach facility, our eye doctor will advise you of all the potential side effects.
